REAL PHOTOS VS AI GENERATED IMAGES
If you'd asked me a few years ago whether AI would become part of photography, I'd have been honest, and said, yeah but only as a tool.
Fast forward to today and almost every business has experimented with AI in some way. AI can write emails, design logos, create social media posts and even generate photos that look incredibly realistic.
But just because it can create images doesn't always mean it should.
As someone who spends their days photographing businesses, products and people, I've noticed something interesting. The businesses getting the best engagement aren't trying to look perfect. They're trying to look real.
And that's exactly what Google wants too.

Google Wants Trust, Not Just Pretty Pictures
Google's goal has always been simple.
It wants to recommend businesses that people can trust.
When someone searches for a local plumber, accountant, café or wedding photographer, Google isn't just looking at keywords anymore. It's looking for signals that prove a business actually exists and has genuine experience.
Real photography helps provide those signals.
Think about it.
If your website contains genuine photos of:
Your team
Your office
Your vehicles
Your products
Completed projects
Happy customers (with permission)
You're showing both visitors and search engines that your business is authentic.
The photos then work towards Googles SEO ranking to say hey, I’ve never seen these photographs before, they’re authentic!
That's difficult to fake.
AI Images Can Create Doubt
The problem with AI isn't that it's bad (I mean ethically there’s quite a few challenges right now) but the problem is that it can create something that never existed. I’ve seen website showing offices they’ve never worked in, staff members who have never worked there, and products that don’t look how they really do.
To a customer, that raises questions, if the team photos are fake...
Is the business real?
If the product images are AI...
What will I actually receive?
Trust is built in seconds, but lost just as quickly.
Real Photos Tell Your Story
Every business has something its competitors can never truly copy: its people. Your team, your workspace, the way you interact with customers and the personality behind your brand are all unique. Real photography and videography captures those details in a way no AI-generated image ever can.
Whether it's a builder finishing a long day's renovation, a café owner chatting with regular customers over the counter or an accountant sharing a laugh with their team, these are the moments that make a business feel genuine. They give potential customers confidence that there are real people behind the brand.
AI can recreate a certain style or aesthetic, but it can't capture authentic experiences or document moments that actually happened. In a world where trust matters more than ever, that's a difference worth investing in.
Better Images Mean Better User Experience
Google also measures how people behave on your website.
If visitors land on your page and immediately leave because everything feels generic, that's not a great signal.
But when people see genuine images that match your business, they tend to stay longer.
They explore.
They read.
They trust what they're seeing.
Real media supports the story you're telling.
A Real image of a bar, it’s staff and the content it has in it’s establishment. It means they can advertise with real images of their bar. So when new customers arrive, it already looks familiar.
Final Thoughts
AI is an incredible tool, and there's no denying the value it brings. I use it myself to help generate ideas, improve workflows and speed up everyday tasks. But when it comes to representing your business, it shouldn't replace what makes you unique.
If your goal is to rank well on Google, build trust with potential customers and create marketing that people actually engage with, authenticity matters. Real photos of your team, your products and your work tell a story that AI images and stock photography simply can't. They show customers that your business exists, that you're proud of what you do and that there's a real person behind the brand.
Anyone can generate a polished image in a few seconds. Not everyone is willing to invest in showing who they really are. That's what sets businesses apart, and it's often the difference between someone scrolling past or stopping to find out more.
Use AI to support your business, not to replace it. Let technology help you work smarter, but let your photography show customers who you really are. Because in the end, people don't buy from AI. They buy from people they trust.
